Vivid and engaging short stories and an assortment of poems, most set on the location of the author's first and successful novel, "Waiting on Zapote Street," a book that continues to expand its international appeal. "Candela's Secrets and Other Havana Stories" is an eclectic collection of powerful stories with unexpected and impressive endings. In it, readers step into the streets of Havana and take a front seat to life in Cuba, particularly in the 1970s and 1980s. After reading Ms. Viamontes' first book, Waiting on Zapote Street: Love and Loss in Castro's Cuba, I was thrilled to obtain her latest collection of short stories and poems. I was immediately engaged by the vivid imagery of Cuba's nostalgic past, thoughtfully depicted in this book. Each story leads you down an emotional path into the characters own personal and complex life. It was nearly impossible to stop reading one story without starting the next! This assortment of short stories all compliment each other, tied together nicely with the beautiful poetry of Ms. Viamontes. All in all I was very pleased and satisfied after reading this next collection of work by Betty Viamontes.

Candela's Secrets gives the reader insight into the struggles of Cuban life under a dictatorship. It gives us a glimpse of the personal challenges of poverty and oppression while showing us the grit and determination of the human spirit to survive and even thrive. I especially enjoy that many of the places and people continue from Waiting on Zapote street - I feel like I am part of the neighborhood.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Each story was very interesting and even though fiction, I perceive that the stories may mimic
real happenings in Cuba at that time. As I read Betty Viamonte's book, I could envision the characters in the story! An interesting read!
Being a person who is often described as one who finds it difficult to relax and read, that certainly wasn't the case while having Candela's Secrets and Other Havana Stories in my hands. I was pleasantly surprised how Betty Viamontes captures my attention. Each of her characters were developed to the point I could envision them in my mind, often wondering what would happen next! As far as I'm concerned, the characters are real. I have no conception of what life is or was like in Cuba, but after reading this book and seeing the pictures, I had a pretty good idea. Ms. Viamontes, thank you for sharing your life experiences, even through fictional characters. I'm anxious to read book #3!
Betty Viamontes, author of the captivating and enlightening novel “Waiting on Zapote Street” has done it again! “Candela’s Secrets and Other Havana Stories” is a collection of short stories and poems depicting the courage, fear, hunger, uncertainty, and adversity encountered on Zapote Street. Just like her previous novel, once you start reading this one you will not want to put it down.
Just can’t put it down! This collection of excellent short stories draws you in as soon as you open the book, as if you had grown up on the street of Havana and around the characters your entire life. You watch them as their story develops, painting a vivid picture of everyday struggles and hardship under communist regime. You will experience the characters' full range of emotions, leaving you constantly wondering, would I have done the same under the same circumstances? I thoroughly enjoyed this book and wish, it could have been longer.
I read Viamontes' first book, Waiting on Zapote street and thoroughly enjoyed it. When I ordered the second one, I wasn't looking forward to it as much, as I am not usually a fan of short stories. Boy, was I glad I bought it; I loved it! Even though the stories were short, I was drawn in quickly and completely to the characters and story lines. It was easy to become immersed and really feel what it was like to live with rationing, with political turmoil, with social expectations, with being born into a life with few choices, with the cowardice and the bravery of people in those circumstances. There were so many complex characters. I wanted a million more of those stories...can't wait for her next one!
This was a book that I could not put down, and I cannot wait for Ms. Viamontes to write her next book to tell us what happened to all these characters. At times it feels like you are in the room with them and not reading words on a page. Ms. Viamontes' descriptions of life in Cuba during the 1970's and 1980's paint vivid pictures of what it was like for ordinary people during the years after the revolution. They open a window for readers to peer through and see the the effects of those tumultuous times on the main characters, their families, friends and surroundings. Her characters experience deep and powerful emotions as they navigate complicated relationships and wrestle with social taboos of the time period. The poetry included in the book is equally poignant, powerful and haunting. A must-read.
